S Jaishankar Career
Jaishankar worked as the third and second secretary in the Indian mission to the Soviet Union in Moscow from 1979 to 1981 after joining the Indian Foreign Service in 1977. During this time, he studied Russian. He eventually made his way back to New Delhi, where he served as the diplomat Gopalaswami Parthasarathy’s special assistant and as undersecretary of the Ministry of External Affairs Americas division, which dealt with relations with the United States. He worked in Sri Lanka as the Indian Peacekeeping Force’s First Secretary and political advisor from 1988 to 1990.
