In the Mission Mangal movie, Indian actor Akshay Kumar played the role of Rakesh Dhawan who is a bachelor of science who believes that there is no science without experiment. Rakesh is a genius scientist who hums songs and has no personal life to speak of. He lives for the Indian Space Research Organisation.
He is the ISRO scientist. When he failed a mission, he was said to head India’s Mars Mission. As the mission of launching GSLV-F06 failed on 25 December 2010 due to a miscalculation by Project Director Tara Shinde, Rakesh takes the blame for the mistakes.
That’s why he is sent to work on Mangalyaan Mission as punishment where Shinde joins him out of guilt. Because of the Mars Orbiter Mission’s tight budget and its aim of reaching Mars, this mission is thought of as an impossible mission by his coworkers.

ISRO announces India’s second Moon Mission Chandrayaan-2 and this mission’s budget is cut by 50% but Tara and Rakesh Dhawan continue to work on the MOM project by making several compromises. He and his team put their hard work and energy into the project to make it happen.
Finally, the MOM satellite is launched on PSLV on 5 November 2013 and this mission is named Mangalyaan. The MOM satellite is inserted into Mars orbit on 24 September 2014 and Indiam became the 4th country in the world to do so and the first country to do so in the first attempt.
