The 46-year-old actress explains that she found the family secret when she told her parents that she was planning to appear on Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s Finding Your Roots, a PBS series where celebrities are revealed through DNA testing.
Her parents Valerie and Earl had a private conversation with Gates, who told them it was always best for families to discuss such revelations privately before filming. Washington says what happened next was a text message from her parents, inviting her to a family reunion in the spring of 2018.
She has attempted to locate her biological father, but according to the Times, there is “no way to determine his identity, despite her best efforts.” She also shared that, at one point, she “tried to give the publisher their money back”, because the book she was writing about was no longer a book she could write.
