On the evening of 23 January 2023, Jaahnavi Kandual was hit by a Seattle Police vehicle when she was walking near Dexter Avenue North and Thomas Street. The Seattle Police responded to the scene after 8 p.m. She was left with life-threatening injuries.
Police initiated CPR and she was rushed to the Harborview Medical Center in critical condition. But she couldn’t survive and passed away. The police department has not disclosed the police officer’s name who hit her.
Jaahnavi’s friends started a GoFundMe campaign to help her family and they have collected more than $161,000.
The Seattle Police Department viral a bodycam recording on 11 September 2023 involving police officers in the tragic incident concerning Jaahnavi. In the footage, a police union leader was captured on his body camera uttering the words,
“She is dead,” Auderer says, then laughs. “No, it’s a regular person—yeah, yeah, just write a check, just, yeah,” he laughs again, “$11,000. She was 26 anyway, she had limited value.”
In addition, the video revealed Daniel Auderer who left the scene of a fatal accident where Officer Kevin Dave had struck and killed Jaahnavi Kandula with his car while responding to a drug overdose call.
According to the investigation, Daniel was on the phone with Miek Solan who is the president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild. According to the Auderer’s account, Jaahnavi had been in a crosswalk at the time of the incident.
