In June 2022, he stepped down from Carte Blanches’ presenter’s job to focus on health. After being recovered he returned to the screen to host Carte Blanche how and thanked the viewers for their support. Earlier this year, he was rushed to hospital. He told posting a photo of his hospital bed,
“Looks scary, but collapsed with suspected stroke in Hoedspruit 14 days ago and dispatched to super-pro Milpark Hospital ICU.”

Watts, says he had been receiving treatment for cancer for months before he picked up sepsis on 19 March.
I was coping and doing the show and it was all working until sepsis reared its ugly head. That is what has flattened me but we’re getting there.
Carte Blanche’s executive producer John Webb said,
“We’re all deeply saddened by the passing of our colleague and patriarch. Having been with Carte Blanche from the beginning, Derek became synonymous with the show, and we acknowledge that it’s largely because of him that we have become who we are.
“Derek was a consummate professional and a dyed-in-the-wool television journalist. But, more importantly, he was a profoundly decent and kind man. We will miss him.”
