In 1961, he began working as a marketing manager for Revlon and later Johnson Products Company. He then began planning a round-the-world sailing trip in 1985, after being laid off from his job at the Department of Human Services and raised funds through the late 1980s.
Bill was persuaded by Robin Knox-Johnston, who in 1969 had become the first person to complete a solo nonstop circumnavigation, to instead sail the southern provinces and become the first black person to do so.
